Volunteer Spotlight — Captain Jason Ortman

Please help us welcome Captain Jason Ortman to the IFRM Fire Advisory Board, he will be responsible as the new Education Chief.

Jason Ortman is a newly appointed Captain with the Saint Paul Fire Department, in Saint Paul Minnesota.  He has a long career in Fire and EMS, beginning as a Paid-On-Call Fire Fighter and has worked for multiple fire departments.  He began in Columbia Heights and served on the fire department for five years until he obtained his first full time position in 1995.  He then worked for Grand Island Nebraska, and served on the fire department there for a year and a half.  He then worked for almost nine years in Lincoln Nebraska, serving on the fire department there and also as a member of Nebraska Task Force One a FEMA USAR Team. 

Jason is a Paramedic and Fire Fighter, with experience and certifications in many sub-specialties.  Most of his focus is on leadership, fire ground command, urban search and rescue medicine, hazardous materials and weapons of mass destruction.

Jason does both fire and ems training with the Saint Paul Fire Department, Inver Hills Community College in the paramedic program and Medics Training Inc.  He has been a conference speaker, fire school instructor and multiple classes as a lead instructor.  He is currently working on rewriting a significant portion of the fire fighter training curriculum for use abroad.  He is also busy on an article, program and method for the care of an injured fire fighter, addressing heat stress, sudden cardiac arrest and rapid gear removal.

Jason enjoys his free time; especially when he has it, buy reading, painting, spending time with his two Jack Russell Terriers Dharma and Sophie.  In addition he is an avid movie buff, and a die-hard Batman fan.
